George McConkey
George McConkey was born in Howth, Co. Dublin. His family have lived in
Howth for four generations and his father was connected with the local Lifeboat
and when George reached 17 years’ of age he also joined the crew of
the Lifeboat and took part in many rescues, includine one when the crew
were awarded medals for a very dangerous rescue.
At an early age he began to draw and with the encouragement of another Artist
he attended the National College of Art in Dublin. He then went on to paint
in oils and when his father died he decided to become a full-time Artist.
With the aid of his wife Phyllis he opened his own Gallery in Howth which
they have been running for the past thirty years. He now has many paintings
in the U.S., Europe and places as far away as Australia.
His forte is marine painting, based upon his early experience of the sea
and boats. Because he works from his own Gallery the main collectors of
his paintings are are in or around Dublin. He ha salso completed commissions
from Banks and other Corporate Institutions.
